Futsal is a great addition to football training. It gives players more opportunities to work with the ball, make decisions and solve problems in different situations.

Our NextGen players also regularly take part in 3v3 competitions, many of which are played as street futsal. We have seen how much they enjoy this format, so weekly futsal gives them another opportunity to play a game they love while also supporting their overall football development.

The futsal ball behaves differently from a regular football. It rolls faster, stays closer to the ground and requires players to adapt their touch, control and passing. The game also involves frequent changes in possession, quick transitions and constant movement, which means players have to think and react quickly.

More Touches, More Decisions

One of the things we value most about futsal is the amount of involvement it gives players. They are constantly part of the game, making themselves available, reacting to changes in possession, finding space and supporting teammates. With the ball moving quickly, players need to scan, recognise their options and make decisions without having much time to think.

This also makes futsal physically demanding. Players are constantly moving, changing direction, accelerating and reacting to what happens around them. Positions are not fixed, and players regularly rotate and move into different areas of the court. Rather than separating physical development from football, futsal allows players to build their fitness and movement skills through the game itself.

Learning in Tight Spaces

Futsal also offers opportunities to work in tight spaces, where players have very little time to react and need to find solutions under pressure. A poor touch, a late decision or failing to recognise an available option can quickly change the situation.

These experiences encourage players to stay aware, adapt and think for themselves. At NextGen, we are not only interested in whether a player can perform a technique. We want them to understand when, where and why to use it.

From Futsal to Football

The skills developed through futsal can complement what players learn on the football pitch. Technical ability, awareness, decision-making, creativity and confidence are important in both formats. Although the games are different, the ability to read situations, adapt and find solutions carries over.

Why Weekly Futsal?

For us, weekly futsal is not simply an extra training session. It gives our players another way to enjoy the game, experience different challenges and develop both technically and physically. We believe that physical development should be part of an engaging football environment, where players are active and challenged because of what the game asks of them, not because they are spending time doing exercises unrelated to football.

Futsal brings these elements together, making it a valuable part of our approach to long-term football development.
